How can we remotely and autonomously inspect assets in a power transmission substation using ground robots safely and efficiently?

Brief Challenge Description:

We seek an innovative technological solution that enables the inspection of high-voltage equipment in power substations using ground robots.

These robots must operate remotely and autonomously, equipped with advanced sensors to monitor assets with precision.

Proposed solutions must address the challenges inherent to substation environments, including intense electromagnetic radiation, energized assets, adverse weather conditions, and confined energized spaces. Ground robots must be able to move efficiently among the assets, inspecting them safely and identifying potential defects.

The goal is to find mature technologies that promote efficiency and safety in operation and maintenance activities, providing a reliable solution to remotely and autonomously identify potential failures in high-voltage substation assets.

Mandatory requirements for the solution:
  • Ground robots: The solution must exclusively utilize ground robots for inspections.
  • Autonomous navigation: Capability to move among assets without human intervention, including obstacle and path detection.
  • Remote control: Possibility of manual operation as an alternative in specific situations.
  • Advanced sensors: Equipped with image and thermal sensors, as well as others that can detect important variables such as vibration or sound.
  • Connectivity: Support for Wi-Fi networks and at least 4G for continuous communication with remote systems.
  • IP resistance: Minimum IP55 classification, ensuring protection against dust and water.
  • API communication: Seamless integration with existing systems such as SCADA or ERPs for data analysis and monitoring.
Business Impacts:
  • Safe and frequent inspections: Perform inspections with increased safety in critical, restricted-access areas.
  • Maintenance optimization: More accurate asset information allows for proactive corrective actions and maintenance planning.
  • Reduced downtime: Early fault detection minimizes operational impact.
  • Operational efficiency: Increased productivity and inspection quality due to automation provided by ground robots.
Expected Benefits:
  • Reduction in operational and Variable Portion costs: Lower costs due to automation and remote analysis, as well as reduced penalties for asset unavailability.
  • Extended asset lifespan: Detailed inspections help detect problems before they cause permanent damage.
  • Innovation and competitiveness: Adopting cutting-edge technologies positions the company as a leader in innovation and efficiency within the energy sector.
